Yamibito affected by light

Yamibito are much more resilient, aggressive, and intelligent than the Shibito, but they function essentially the same way. They are also repelled by light, meaning that they can be weakened by focusing a flashlight on them or turning on the lights in a room.

Like the Shibito, a Yamibito can be defeated, but is revived when a Yamirei re-enters the corpse. Eliminating the Yamirei (which are also intolerant to light) renders the Yamibito unconscious indefinitely. However, due to their improved intelligence and strength, Yamibito will not fall for distractions that may have worked on Shibito, and they are also much harder to defeat in combat. It should also be noted that Yamibito attack in numbers, making them extremely dangerous. Yamibito sometimes emit a terrible scream upon death.

Interestingly, Yamibito will often make positive or negative comments about their "Shell" (their bodies). This shows a level of detachment of the Yamirei animating the corpse. Despite this, the original personality, memories, and soul of the host is present as well, giving the Yamibito a bizarre temperament.

Yamibito display a wider range of emotions than their shibito counterparts, and tend to display an almost childish glee when observed in their idle state or even as they pursue humans. They also display manipulative and cunning behavior in order to trick and coax their prey into revealing themselves.

Types of Yamibito[]

Base Yamibito[]

Base Yamibito (零闇人); lit. "0 Yamibito"; are essentially like shibito but more resistant and certainly more intelligent; they tend to roam in dark places since light damages them. They can hold both fire arms and melee weapons. These types of Yamibito occur when a Yamirei enters a corpse without mutating or evolving it in any additional way, allowing the Yamibito to maintain a more composed humanoid appearance and temperament.

They can sometimes be heard or seen talking alone while patroling an area which can give a hint to the player of where they are located.

Base Yamibito can be harmed by light, either by the flashlight or artificial lights around some areas, but not for long since they can still attack the player.

Base Yamibito are also officially labeled as "Type-Zero/Rei Yamibito" by the creators of Siren 2.

Otsu Yamibito[]

Otsu-yamibito (乙闇人) lit. "B Yamibito"; are an evolved form of Yamibito, specific to females. The only notable Otsu Yamibito is Tomoe Ohta, with two others that look similar appearing throughout the game. Their entire upper body has transformed into a large head with a pair of long bird-like legs that end in talons growing from the bottom, allowing them to swiftly catch up to fleeing humans. Their lower body appears mostly untouched, however, creature designer Miki Takahashi has stated that removing the cloth from an Evolved Yamibito's body would reveal an unnatural and utterly inhuman visage. While persistent and durable, they cannot hold weapons unlike their male counterparts, but they make up for this with a powerful leap attack utilizing their talons. When aware of danger, the Otsu Yamibito's front becomes invulnerable to Damage, making it imperative to attack them from behind, just like Kou Yamibito. By evolving, Otsu Yamibito become more instinctual and less intelligent than Unevolved "Type Zero/Rei" Yamibito.

Otsu Yamibito are popularly called "Dog Yamibito" by the fanbase. Despite the nickname, they have more in common with birds or reptiles due to their pigeon-like front legs.

"Otsu" is a type of rank denoting "B" or "Secondary" in a list. It can also mean "strange/odd" (an accurate description of the Otsu Yamibito), and "chic/trendy/stylish", though only Tomoe seems to worry about that trait in regards to her obsessive search for her Hair Ornament.

Kou Yamibito[]

Kou Yamibito (甲闇人) lit. "A Yamibito"; are evolved Yamibito, specific to males. They are substantially stronger than their previous iterations and defeating them is often a mission objective. Their body is divided in 2; the lower half is composed of a face with legs resembling a hand, the upper half is a normal yamibito but without face and without legs. Unlike their evolved female counterpart, the Kou Yamibito retains human arms, allowing them to carry weapons to better defend their territory. When aware of danger, the Kou Yamibito becomes invulnerable to Damage from the front, making it imperative to attack them from behind, just like Otsu Yamibito. The Kou Yamibito also has the unique ability to create a thick dark-red mist in their immediate vicinity when close to a Human, allowing them to disorientate and ambush prey. By evolving, Kou Yamibito become more instinctual and less intelligent than Unevolved "Type Zero/Rei" Yamibito.

"Kou" is a type of rank denoting "A" or "first" in a list. It can also mean "Shell" perhaps tying into their ability to become immune to damage from the front.

Yamibito script[]

Similar to the Mana/Shibito script from Hanuda in Forbidden Siren, the Yamibito from Forbidden Siren 2 also seem to have their own script. Some inscriptions can be found through the game.

Unlike the shibito script from Siren 1, the yamibito runes are not translated by the game, nor is there a handy key like Siren 1's archive 12 to help us along. Needless to say, the messages aren't in English either[1].
